SPECIAL MESSAGEs - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2020 - scroll to read both
Good Morning, Everyone,
I know we had a rocky start to this past Friday's service with some technical glitches but, thanks to some dedicated people, we were able to get back up. The service recording is available on our website archives.
If you'd like to watch the whole service, click here.
If you'd like to skip directly to the sermon, you can click here.
I'm sorry, I haven't figured out how to create a version of the service without the sermon!
We've got a busy week coming up at Temple Sinai. Read through the following announcements about changes and additions to what is going on.
Thursday Evening/Friday Morning
Looking for a fun activity and an opportunity to make your Shabbat table a little more special? Julie TelRav will be offering a two part Zoom tutorial on making challah! On Thursday evening at 7:00 pm, click here to join us as we make the dough, refrigerating it overnight, and then finishing it up on Friday at 1:00 pm. Click here to join that zoom session.
Please click here to see the ingredients you'll want to have on hand.
Friday Evening
With the Governor's new proclamation, Temple Sinai will retreat even further from its normal operations. We will not be broadcasting services from our building any longer and instead, we'll be shifting over to a zoom-based service. There are going to be some real upsides to this including increased participation and the ability to see who else is in the service with us. If you do not already have Zoom on your device, Then you'll need to click here a few minutes early to download the software to your computer, tablet or phone. Then, at 6pm this Friday, you will just click here (meeting ID: 514-678-155) and you'll be joined into our room.
Saturday Morning
At 9:00am
The Eugene B. Borowitz Memorial Bible Study Group will meet as usual but this time through Zoom. No experience studying Bible is necessary. Drop-ins and first-timers welcome. Click here to join the zoom meeting. (meeting ID 200-076-655)
And then...at 10:30am
Another one of the benefits of our reliance on technology is our ability to share the Shabbat morning service with you from the comfort of your own home. Join us at 10:30am as Cameron Rubin leads the services as a bar mitzvah. This service will be hosted through zoom so you'll click here when the service is beginning to enter the site. (meeting ID 203-322-1649)
Saturday Evening Havdalah
This will be our third week ending Shabbat and the short 15-minute service has become precious to so many of us. Tune in through zoom by clicking here and we'll all sing a little with Cantor Micah and prolong the sweetness of Shabbat together. Don't worry if you are familiar with the prayers, I'll have all four of them on screen for you!
Tech support guys...
Finally, if you're having any problems downloading or connecting to Zoom - we have three guys standing by, real-time, to help you.
On Friday evening and Saturday morning, you can call either:
Patrick Kramer - (203) 979-9403
Marty Newman - (917) 502-0661
Grant Kallen - (203) 912-8749

Good Afternoon, All,
I missed a couple of things for this coming weekend...
We're doing a lot on Zoom moving forward and I know some of you are unsure about making it work. So we're going to schedule two sessions for you to try it. If you have never used Zoom before and would like to give it a dry-run:
On Thursday, you can click here at 10am to try it out,
or you can click here at 7pm to practice.
No need to do this if you're already a Zoom Power-User!
Tech support guys...
Remember, if you're having any problems on Thursday or on Shabbat downloading or connecting to Zoom - we have three guys standing by, real-time, to help you.
Marty Newman - (917) 502-0661
Grant Kallen - (203) 912-8749
Patrick Kramer - (203) 979-9403
I also forgot to tell you that the Havdalah Service will begin at 7pm.
Tune in through zoom by clicking here and we'll all sing a little with Cantor Micah and prolong the sweetness of Shabbat. Don't worry if you are unfamiliar with the prayers, I'll have all four of them on screen for you!
I forgot to invite you to join us on Sunday morning for our weekly service at 9:30am. This is geared towards our Religious School families but all are welcome and you might even hear a story that's new to you. Click here to join the zoom mtg.
And finally, we'll be hosting a zoom-based Service of Healing for Sinai members and friends on Sunday at 1pm. For those who are not feeling at peace, you should join us. Some quiet prayer, song, and reflection on the strange times we are living through together. Click here to join that service.

pREVIOUS Special Message - Thursday, March 12, 2020
MUCH OF THE BELOW CONTENT IS OUTDATED - ARCHIVED HERE FOR REFERENCE.
Good Afternoon, Temple Sinai,
We certainly do live in interesting times, do we not? The level of concern that we’re all feeling is an important mixture of real data, input from everyone around us and actual emotion. The challenge is how easily we are influenced by one more than the other. A local physician who I respect enormously wrote publicly yesterday that there is no way for organizational leaders to “win” in a case like this. Modifying/canceling programs too early will upset those who are still calm. Waiting too long will upset those who are growing concerned. There is no ideal moment and there certainly is no ideal outcome when we’re reacting to such a concerning real public health adversary.
For that reason, I am going to ask your forgiveness as I make the difficult decision to significantly curtail the moments of public gathering at Temple Sinai for the immediate future. I do this not because I believe the risks warrant it; I still do not think that the risk to our members in the local cities and towns is very high. Instead, I do so out of an abundance of compassion for those who are scared. As Stamford Public Schools have just chosen to close their full operations, we will do the same.
All public gatherings for services, programs, events and meetings will be postponed beginning tomorrow, Friday. We will reevaluate in two weeks with updates as we go. Below are details for some of the biggest events. For other activities/groups of which you are a part, stay tuned for communications from the organizers on alterations. We will be making decisions in real-time as the risk assessment changes.
- For the time being, we will not be holding religious school classes on site. We are exploring distance learning options with the teachers to try to continue the progress of your children in developing their Judaic knowledge and Jewish identity. Additional information for families will be forthcoming.
- Friday evening services will be held but, like so many sporting events, without the “crowd”. We invite you to remain home, have dinner and join us virtually online with our free streaming service. Click here at 7:30 tomorrow evening to be with us. As you participate on one screen, you may choose to open up this virtual prayer book on another.
- Shabbat morning Torah Study will similarly take place virtually – click here for more information to log into a Zoom Session or to call in to the conference line to join us. Please call the office if you have questions.
- This week’s Shabbat morning Kindergarten and First Grade Service with the families will be postponed. We hope to be able to reschedule in the not-distant future. Stay tuned.
- The women’s retreat is still planning to run as scheduled. We understand that there may be individuals who decide not to attend and we encourage you to make the choice that feels right – trusting that others will stay home if they are feeling under-the-weather. As conditions change, the event organizers will be in touch with all registrants.
- Our teen youth group (SoSTY) will be recieving a Zoom invitation from Erica in the next couple of days to discuss upcoming events.
- Sinai Circles registrants will be hearing from their circle leaders about adjustments. There is still some room left in a few of the circles for those who wish to join. Click here for more info.
We are an organization dedicated to bringing people together which is why keeping us apart is so difficult for Sinai. I’m aware that modifying our operations will necessarily affect the opposite goal – raising the sense that Temple Sinai, one of our sources of safety and comfort is no longer available. I will remain available to you as we move forward for life-cycle emergencies, for our normally scheduled meetings (but by phone/Zoom) or for your needs to simply talk. Email is still best, but feel free to call me anytime directly on my cell at (347) 419-3080.
